Beela-Kaar was a powerful Argonian sorcerer who lived before the Duskfall, during the height of the Argonian civilization in Black Marsh. According to the oral stories passed down by Argonian elders, Beela-Kaar was renowned for his great power and skill in the arcane arts, and served as a trusted advisor to the Saxhleel leaders, using his magic to help the people of Murkmire, until he turned to dark necromancy in an attempt to save his beloved mate, leading to his downfall and the creation of a cursed artifact, the Golden Skull of Beela-Kaar.[1]
HistoryEdit
Long before the Duskfall, Beela-Kaar advised Murkmire rulers and aided the people of the Black Marsh with his magic. However, Beela-Kaar's life took a dark turn when his beloved mate succumbed to a terrible wasting disease. Despite his best efforts using conventional magic, Beela-Kaar was unable to find a cure for his mate's illness. Desperate to save them, Beela-Kaar turned to the darker aspects of the arcane arts, including necromancy. Although Beela-Kaar was unable to eliminate the disease, he used the dark arts to reanimate his mate's corpse, creating a mindless zombie that remained by his side. The Argonians saw this as an abomination and pleaded with Beela-Kaar to let his mate rest in peace, but the sorcerer ignored them and retreated to one of the towering stone xanmeers, where he conducted increasingly dark experiments with necromantic spells and rituals.[1]
As Beela-Kaar's experiments grew more and more depraved, a few of his creations escaped and ravaged the surrounding area. The Saxhleel elders finally took action, sending a band of warriors to confront the mad sorcerer and put an end to his dark rituals. The resulting siege lasted for 33 days and nights, with many Saxhleel warriors falling to Beela-Kaar's dark spells, only to be risen again as undead abominations to attack their comrades. As the Saxhleel warriors gained the upper hand, Beela-Kaar realized that his xanmeer would soon fall. In a final act of desperation, he directed all of his considerable power inward, turning his remains into an artifact - a solid gold skull, known as the Golden Skull of Beela-Kaar. The ritual consumed his body, leaving nothing behind but the cursed Golden Skull of Beela-Kaar, which was imbued with the curse that had the power to destroy Murkmire. Additionally, the skull contained his power, and possibly his sentience.[1]
LegacyEdit
To protect themselves from the curse, the Saxhleel elders locked away the Golden Skull in a hidden xanmeer on a forbidden island, Norg-Tzel where it remains to this day as a reminder of the dangers of unchecked ambition and the corrupting influence of dark magic. The legend of Beela-Kaar, the mad sorcerer of Murkmire, is still recounted by the Saxhleel elders as a cautionary tale of the consequences of dabbling in the darker arts of magic.[1] The skull was protected by the undead abominations.[2]
Sometime around 2E 582, centuries after the fall of Beela-Kar,[3] the Cyrodilic Collections, a group of historians and archaeologists that hail from Cyrodiil, made an expedition to Norg-Tzel.[4] As of then the isle was still considered forbidden.[5] The group sought to uncover the lost history of the Argonians and have made attempts to uncover every piece of the past they can document.[6] At the same time, a group known as the Blackguards, comprised of the descendants of inmates from Blackrose Prison, attempted to seek out the Golden Skull of Beela-Kaar.[4][7][8] Margus Derius, an Imperial with a grudge against Murkmire, and saw the Skull of Beela-Kaar as a means to enact his revenge upon the Saxhleel for the death of his son at the hands of the Naga-Kur.[9][10][11] However, he was stopped in his tracks in Norg-Tzel by an associate of the Cyrodilic Collections.[12] The associate was able to acquire the skull and make a swift escape from the Norg-Tzel Xanmeer, returning to the Collections' alcove in Stormhold.[12] Ever since then, Cyrodiilic Collections had gained fame throughout Tamriel, garnering new members from as far as Stros M'Kai and Vulkhel Guard.[13] News of the events in Norg-Tzel spread to Lilmoth as well,[14] where the skull was kept on display.[15]
