Castle Wayrest (Daggerfall)

Castle Wayrest (also called Wayrest Castle[1] or Wayrest Palace)[2] is the seat of power for the Kingdom of Wayrest and is located in the capital city. The castle is arguably the most famous castle in all of Tamriel and is noted for its sweeping spires that provide a grand view of the entire countryside. Its classical stone-keep architecture had set the standard for noble housing for centuries.[3] The castle lies in the eponymous Palace District of Wayrest city,[4] and is found on the north end of Wayrest Boulevard.[5]

HistoryEdit

Castle Wayrest ca. 2E 582

The Gardner family built walled palaces on the High Rock side of the Bjoulsae River, and over time, the settlement grew around them. But Castle Wayrest was originally built by King Aphren Gardner,[5] who reigned over Wayrest in the mid First Era, after King Farangel's reign started in 1E 1100.[5][6] A pathway was constructed to connect Castle Wayrest with the Wayrest Sewers.[7] When the Gardner dynasty died in the wake of the Knahaten Flu, the Earl of Cumberland, Emeric took up the mantle of King and started the Cumberland Dynasty in 2E 563.[8] Before he had founded the second Orsinium, Kurog gro-Bagrakh and his Orcish companions traveled to Wayrest and met with King Emeric in the castle.[9]

In time, the Cumberland dynasty vacated the throne and the Horley dynasty continued in their place. Eventually, the Septim Dynasty of the Third Empire took over the kingdom and its castle.[5] The first known Septim to rule as King was Cassynder Septim, son of former Emperor Pelagius III and former Empress Regent Katariah.[10][Note 1] He eventually left the throne due to his declining health and left it to his half-brother, Uriel, who in turn succeeded him as Emperor Uriel Septim IV despite not being a blood-related Septim.[10]

In 3E 390, after fleeing from the Imperial City, King Eadwyre married the widow Queen of Mournhold, Barenziah. She also brought her children, Helseth and Morgiah to live with them in Castle Wayrest.[11] In 3E 405, an Agent of the Blades visited Castle Wayrest and made contact with several members of the royal family, such as Elysana and Morgiah.[12][13] In that same time, the regent Queen of Sentinel, Akorithi tasked the adventurer with stealing a painting from Castle Wayrest's treasury, an heirloom that originally belonged to the late King of Daggerfall, Lysandus. Once they reached the treasury, they were ambushed but they successfully escaped Wayrest with the painting.[14]

On the 7th of Sun's Height, 4E 188,[15] Wayrest was sacked and taken over by corsairs when King Barynia left the city gates open for them and barred the castle's gates.[16][17] In the midst of the chaos, King Barynia was confronted by a Dark Brotherhood assassin. Whether he was spared or killed is unknown, but the King disappeared from Wayrest and left the kingdom to his daughter.[17]
