Detailed WalkthroughEdit

The Gateway GhostEdit

In Sadrith Mora, you'll learn that a ghost is haunting the South Turret bedchamber at the South Wing of Gateway Inn. When someone drives it out, it comes right back. It's ruining business at Gateway and Angaredhel, the Prefect, is unhappy.

Go to Gateway Inn and talk to Angaredhel. He'll give you the directions to the haunted room. He will also tell you that Mage-Mistress Arara Uvulas inspected the room but does not know why the ghost reappears or how to stop it.

Detective WorkEdit

Angaredhel advises you to speak to Arara Uvulas at the Telvanni Council House. You can kill the ghost (as many times as you want), but you cannot solve the quest in this manner.

The Council House is a big sphere located north of the docks. Speak to Arara Uvulas there about the Gateway Haunting and she will tell you that she can find no evidence of a restless spirit or ancestral influences. She suspects that a conjuration expert is involved. Ask anyone at the Council House about a conjuration expert and you'll be told that Uleni Heleran at the Mage's Guild teaches Conjuration, though she will not teach it to you.

Finding the PranksterEdit

Go to Wolverine Hall and speak to anyone there. You'll learn that Uleni Heleran is mischievous and that she has bad feelings about Angaredhel and the Gateway Inn. Confront Uleni Heleran about the Gateway Haunting. She'll admit that it was a joke she played. She agrees to stop the haunting and gives you a note to take to Angaredhel.

Return to Angaredhel, select Work from the list of dialogue options, and you will be given three choices, two of which have the same consequences:

  1. Explain what happened, but withhold Uleni's name
  2. Explain what happened, and include Uleni's name
  3. Explain what happened, and deliver Uleni's Papers

If you withhold Uleni's name, Angaredhel's Disposition will be lowered by 20 points. Otherwise, if you choose either of the other two options, Angaredhel's disposition will be raised by 30 points. Alternatively, if you killed Uleni, you will also get a 30 point Disposition boost. Whichever option you choose, he will reward you with a choice of one of three rings: a Fighter Ring, a Mage Ring, or a Thief Ring. You will also receive one Reputation point however you choose to complete this quest.

NotesEdit

  • When you have finished the quest, you can boost the disposition of House Telvanni members in town by mentioning the Gateway haunting topic. Their disposition will increase by 20 and this method can be repeated until the disposition of the NPC is 70 or higher. However many (all?) will refuse to talk about it until your disposition hits 50, so taking advantage of this more than once will require disposition-shifting magic like fortify personality.
  • You can additionally use this method to increase dispositions with NPCs in Wolverine Hall, but there it only works if you finished the quest by not revealing Uleni Heleran's involvement.
  • Some people will point you towards Master Neloth when you're looking for a conjuration expert, but if you ask him about it, you get an annoyed reply "Conjuration expert? OF COURSE I'm an expert, idiot. I'm a mage-lord. But you think I'm sending ghosts to haunt the Gateway Inn? Get OUT of here, you fool!" and his disposition drops by 10.
  • If you have killed Master Neloth, his Mouth will have disappeared from the Council Hall, and you cannot complete this quest. This can be fixed by using the Console placeatpc "Arara Uvulas" 1 1 1 1
  • An Imperial Cult quest known as The Haunting features another Heleran causing a haunting, but this time as the ghost itself.

BugsEdit

  • Arara Uvulas may not have the "Gateway haunting" topic if you first killed the ghost and later talked to Angaredhel about "work". ?
    • Asking Uleni Heleran about "latest rumors" will make the "Gateway haunting" topic available.
    •   Use the console command player->addtopic "Gateway haunting" to add the topic.
  •   The option to "Explain what happened, but withhold Uleni's name" is not available on Xbox.

Quest StagesEdit

The following Journal ID and Index codes can be used with the Journal console command to manually update the quest to a certain point.

Index Finishes Quest Journal Entry
1 A ghost is haunting the South Turret bed chamber at the Gateway Inn. When someone drives it out, it comes right back. It's ruining business at the Gateway, and Angaredhel the Prefect is unhappy.
5 Angaredhel at the Gateway Inn says a ghost keeps reappearing in the South Turret bed chamber. He can't rent the room, and all the guests are in an uproar. Mage-Mistress Arara Uvulas, Master Neloth's Mouth, came to take a look, but said she couldn't see how to stop the hauntings. Angaredhel says the person who gets rid of the ghost permanently will receive a very generous gift from a local enchanter.
6 Angaredhel says the haunting is in the South Turret bed chamber. It's upstairs, then south and up stairs to the room. He says it isn't hard to drive it away, but it always comes back. Mage-Mistress Arara Uvulas, Master Neloth's Mouth, inspected the room, but couldn't say why it reappears or how to stop it. She thinks it may be some mischievous sorcerer. I should go talk to her; she's always at the Telvanni Council House.
8 I killed the haunting, and reported to Angaredhel, but he says no matter how often it is killed, it reappears. So killing the haunt is not the solution. Angaredhel told me to talk to Mage-Mistress Arara Uvulas, Master Neloth's Mouth. She is the expert that Angaredhel consulted. Maybe she can tell me where to start.
10 I spoke with Arara Uvulas, Master Neloth's Mouth, who came to inspect the South Turret bed chamber when the Gateway haunting manifests. She says she can find no evidence of a restless spirit or ancestral influences. Banishing the ghost is easy, but she doesn't know why it reappears, or how to stop it. She suspects that a Conjuration expert is involved -- someone skilled at summoning ghosts.
15 At Wolverine Hall they say that the only local Conjuration expert is Uleni Heleran, a Mages Guild instructor. She teaches Conjuration.
20 Someone at Wolverine Hall said that Uleni Heleran has a mischievous personality, and that she has some sort of bad feeling for Angaredhel and the Gateway Inn. The person also noticed that Uleni Heleran had been magically transporting into Wolverine Hall quite a bit lately, apparently using either a Mark and Recall spell sequence or a Divine Intervention.
30 I spoke to Uleni Heleran about the Gateway hauntings. She wouldn't respond directly to my questions, suggesting that the matter was none of my business.
35 I was able to persuade Uleni Heleran that, though the Gateway haunting joke was charming enough, the humor was beginning to lose its luster, and that someone might get hurt. She agreed to stop the hauntings, but she gave me a little note and asked me to give it to Angaredhel.
50 Finishes quest  I told Angaredhel that the hauntings would stop, but I didn't give him the note from Uleni Heleran, or reveal Uleni's name. As a reward, he gave me my choice of three enchanted rings -- a Fighter Ring, A Mage Ring, and a Thief Ring. I chose a Fighter Ring.
55 Finishes quest  I told Angaredhel that the hauntings would stop, but I didn't give him the note from Uleni Heleran, or reveal Uleni's name. As a reward, he gave me my choice of three enchanted rings -- a Fighter Ring, A Mage Ring, and a Thief Ring. I chose a Mage Ring.

65 Finishes quest  I told Angaredhel that the hauntings would stop, and revealed Uleni's name, but I didn't give him her message. As a reward, he gave me my choice of three enchanted rings -- a Fighter Ring, A Mage Ring, and a Thief Ring. I chose a Fighter Ring.

100 Finishes quest  I told Angaredhel that the hauntings would stop, because I determined that Uleni Heleran was the source of the hauntings, and I 'took care of her'. He didn't want to know the details. As a reward, he gave me my choice of three enchanted rings -- a Fighter Ring, A Mage Ring, and a Thief Ring. I chose a Fighter Ring.

1 I'm told that Master Neloth of Tel Naga is a powerful wizard, though Conjuration is not his specialty. Uleni Heleran at the Mages Guild, however, teaches Conjuration.
