After freeing Narsis Dren from an illusion trap, he will be determined to find Maelmoth the Mysterious' treasure. He will also admit that got kicked out of the Guild Hall by Deem-Vilax but he stills needs the journal. Head to the Mages Guild and find Deem-Vilax in the library sorting books.

"Welcome to the Mages Guild library.
Please handle our books and scrolls with the care they deserve. I already cast out a careless Dark Elf. I pray that I will not have to ask anyone else to leave today."
I'd like to see the last journal of Maelmoth the Mysterious.
"Ugh. Do you work with that strutting guar, Narsis Dren? The famed scholar? Scholar, my shedding tail-scales.
He tore a page in a valuable book, and I suspect he stole one of Maelmoth's scrolls. What reason could I possibly have to help you?"
<Lie> I have no idea who you're talking about. I'm studying Maelmoth's works alone.
"Quite a coincidence that two people come calling for the same rare text on the same day. Then again, helping one of Narsis Dren's competitors does warm my scales.
Fine. The journal's there on the table. But if any harm comes to it, I will find out."
Yes, he asked me to come. But I really do need that journal.
"I knew it. Wise of him to send an associate like you to offer an olive branch. Cowardly, but wise."
If you let me read the journal, I can compensate you for the damage Narsis caused. [led goldleveled gold  ]
"Scoundrels like Narsis always try to buy their way out of problems. Then again, a repair like this is costly. Hmph. Very well. It's there on the table.
Tell that scaleless idiot that if I find out he stole a scroll, he will be sorry."
Thank you.
[Persuade] I'm a far superior adventurer. I promise, I will keep the journal safe from harm.
"Hmph. Far superior to Narsis Dren is no great accomplishment. Nonetheless, I feel I can trust you. It's there on the table.
Do not prove me wrong on this. We treasure all arcane texts, but Maelmoth's riddles are of special interest to the Guild."
Thank you.
<Lie> Wait, did you say Narsis Dren? Sorry, I misheard you. My associate is Barsis Fren.
"Barsis Fren? As mud is my mother. To tell me such an utterly transparent lie, you must be truly desperate. Honestly, I am embarrassed for you.
You may read the journal if you promise to keep Narsis out of my library. Barsis Fren. By the Hist …."
I will. Thank you.

Deem will point to a nearby table where the journal lies and give you a warning:

Deem-Vilax: "The journal is just there on the table."
Deem-Vilax: "I should warn you: Maelmoth was mad as a sack of weasels. Whatever you intend to do with the text, I doubt it will be worth the effort."

Talking to her again before taking the book:

"Why do you loiter? I told you that you can borrow the text. Take it and be on your way.
This is a library, not an adventurers' lounge."

If you speak with her after taking the book:

"Remember what I said. If any harm comes to that book, you will not enjoy the consequences."

After hunting down Maelmoth's Mysterium to Folgunthur Barrow, you can return to the book to Deem-Vilax. She will recognize you as you approach.

Deem-Vilax: "Ah, the Maelmoth historian."

Her reaction will depend what choice you made regarding Narsis Dren and another illusion trap. If you neglected to tell him the bottle was trapped, you will have to bring Bottle-Narsis back to Deem along with the journal:

"You are here to return Maelmoth's journal, I assume?
It does my heart good to know that not everyone in Solitude is as careless and irresponsible as that Narsis Dren."
Speaking of careless and irresponsible Narsis Dren, he turned himself into a bottle.
"So, the mud-mouth opportunist finally gets his just desserts? Ha! The Mages Guild would happily take that off your hands.
I will reverse the spell … eventually. Why rush a teachable moment, eh? Take this. You have more than earned it, I think."

Deem-Vilax will then place the bottle on a nearby cupboard:

Deem-Vilax: "There we are. Oh, Narsis. You really tie the room together. Ha!"

Talking with her afterwards:

"Perhaps I should find a bundle of flowers. You know … to make Narsis useful, for once."

However, if you told him the truth you bring the journal back while he thinks up how to spin events for his next book:

"You've brought Maelmoth's journal back? Good.
I assume that the mad mage's ramblings did not lead you and your greedy Dark Elf friend to any fabled treasures."
You assume correctly. Here's the journal back, as promised.
"People often forget to return Guild property. What a welcome surprise. And even better, you didn't bring that shifty mud-mouth with you! It brings me no small measure of joy to know he found nothing.
Take this. News like this is worth every drake!"

Once you complete the quest she will say:

Deem-Vilax: "I simply cannot wait to throw Narsis Dren's next opus in the waste bin. He's a terrible writer. I won't allow his books on my shelves!"

Speaking with her afterwards she will wish you well:

"Safe travels. And if you ever see Narsis again, be sure to give him a firm kick in the shin for me."
