The Dead KingEdit

Examine the body and Nanwen's spirit will rise:

Nanwen: "Freedom at last! Where in Oblivion am I? Need to find some higher ground."
Nanwen: "This … this can't be right!"

Once he reaches higher ground, speak to him:

"Who are you? You weren't on the excavation team."
I'm <Character Name>. You're not an Ayleid warlord.
"I … am not trying to look like an Ayleid warlord—wait.
I'm Nanwen. A digger. Endarwe hired me to excavate Rulanyil's Fall, and I was digging out some rooms … there was a cave-in."
I see.
"I'm dead, aren't I?"
Yes.
"I was afraid of that.
There was a cave-in, and the next thing I know, I'm on a slab with a necromancer chanting over me. She didn't seem to notice, so I laid still and hoped she'd go away. She stayed for quite a long time."
Endarwe told me your remains were those of an Ayleid warlord.
"I don't understand. We were looking for an Ayleid warlord—to put in Endarwe's historical collection—but we never found one.
Please, take me to Endarwe."
I'll take you to Endarwe.

Speaking to him again:

"I hate them all. The Ayleids, necromancers, the Merethic Society, Endarwe, my father; to Oblivion with all of them!"

He will make comments when you get out of combat:

Nanwen: "Seems warfare is still a grisly business."
Nanwen: "That's got to be the last of them, right? There can't possibly be more cultists."
Nanwen: "Do you still have spirits in this age? What Era is it? I really need a drink."
Nanwen: "I wonder if the world has changed. I don't suppose my family's married into monarchy."

If you exit out of the conversation with Endarwe and before turning in the quest, he will say:

"Endarwe has to know more. Talk to him again."

Finish the quest and Nanwen will give Endarwe a piece of his mind:

Nanwen: "Did I hear that correctly? You passed me off as an Ayleid warlord?"
Endarwe: "Don't worry. I paid your family for the body."
Nanwen: "You paid my …. How long were you going to let people think I was a famous dead person?"
Endarwe: "You aren't getting any less dead, so somewhere around "forever," I think. Look at it this way: now you're dead and famous."
Nanwen: "You mean you're going to keep doing this? Every day?"
Endarwe: "Oh, yes. I'll have to hire a security staff, I think. We don't want any more surprise necromancers. Now go back to your body. I'll figure out what to do with you later."
Nanwen: "This is worse than Oblivion."

Nanwen will dissipate into nothingness.

Nanwen's SwordEdit

Nanwen's spirit can be summoned by using the Nanwen's Sword memento earned in Rulanyil's Fall. He will appear and speak one of the following lines:

Nanwen: "The joke's on Endarwe. I'm bound to that sword now. Though he does still have my body—a little off-putting actually."
Nanwen: "This can't be all there is to the afterlife. Must be some way to pass onto the next plane. Some cliff I could jump off. Maybe a tiger could eat me."
Nanwen: "What's on your itinerary today, adventurer? Probably more interesting than mine."
Nanwen: "By the Divines, I had no idea death would be so boring. Literally nothing happens. Let that be a fair warning to you, adventurer!"
Nanwen: "The sayings are wrong. I don't have more appreciation for life now. I'm just slightly bitter. And bored."
Nanwen: "I wonder if my family's moved on. I just hope they're safe."
Nanwen: "Strange that my clothes are made of the same substance as my … ghostly form."
Nanwen: "You know—sometimes I have better things to do than speak to you. Can't say what they are, but they're there!"

NotesEdit

  • Some of Nanwen's post-combat dialogue lines are written as if he was alive in another Era when he instead died recently while excavating the ruins.
