Quick WalkthroughEdit
- Speak to Farkas or Vilkas about work.
- Travel to a dragon lair.
- Kill the dragon.
- Talk to Farkas or Vilkas.
Detailed WalkthroughEdit
After completing the quests Glory of the Dead and Dragon Rising, talk to Farkas or Vilkas and tell him that you're here for work. He will tell you that he doesn't believe in dragon stories and wants to see a dragon for himself. He mentions that he heard there is a dragon at a dragon lair. The exact location can be any dragon lair and will be randomly selected.
Once you reach the predetermined dragon lair, you will find a leveled dragon. Kill the dragon and then talk to the quest-giver. He will thank you and give you a leveled sum of gold. He will then say he wants to stay for a while and honor it.
RewardEdit
Levels† | Reward‡ | USLEEP Reward |
---|---|---|
1–9 | 100 | 100 |
10–19 | 150 | 150 |
20–29 | 300 | 200 |
30–39 | 300 | 250 |
40+ | 300 | 300 |
†Level is based on when the player completed the previous quest (or level one for the first quest), not the player's level when receiving the quest or its reward.
‡The reward amounts for radiant Companions quests do not progress as intended.
- The Unofficial Skyrim Legendary Edition Patch, version 3.0.3, fixes this bug. (details)
NotesEdit
- Farkas' and Vilkas' dialogue for this quest will express uncertainty that the rumors of the existence of dragons are true, even if they have already faced one during an earlier quest.
- You can start this quest even if you have one of Aela the Huntress quests started. You can't turn in Aela's quest though until this one is finished.
BugsEdit
- When reaching the lair, there may be no dragon.
- Vilkas stops following you once you walk outside Jorrvaskr. The quest log indicates that the quest is completed, but the arrow on the map remains until you travel there. Once you arrive at the location of the dragon, the arrow disappears from the map, but the dragon is still there. If you don't go to the location, but instead go back inside to talk to Vilkas and activate the quest again, the quest will now show two dragons. The new one will be in the same location as the first one. The quest will claim to be complete again as soon as you step outside and Vilkas stops following again.
- If the dragon lair you are sent to is also listed in the quest log as a Dragon bounty quest, this quest does not complete once the dragon is killed. As a result, either Farkas or Vilkas cannot be dismissed as your follower and will have no dialogue options other than offering skill training. ?
- Sometimes, despite the message 'your Companion replaces your follower' appearing, your follower may not return to their default place of residence and you will end up with both Vilkas and your current follower accompanying you. This may be beneficial to the player, and it is possible to delay completing the quest in order to keep two followers. After completing the quest, Vilkas will stay back and this will resolve itself. ?

Notes
- Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g.,
<Alias=LocationHold>
) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game. - Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering
setstage CR14 stage
, wherestage
is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages, but it is possible to clear all stages of the quest usingresetquest CR14
