Quick WalkthroughEdit
- Find Joften's notes on Golden and Dark Smithing.
- Read Joften's notes.
Detailed WalkthroughEdit
While investigating the first Saints camp for Balance of Power, you will slay the Saints Bandit Leader. In his corpse is a note called Notes on the Blacksmith, which gives details about the blacksmith Joften and his ability to forge Golden & Dark equipment. However, it would appear the bandits lost patience with Joften, who became increasingly insane, and ended up killing him. His notes, however, are hidden and would likely reveal his secrets. The only hint given was that as a child, Joften used to play in the area around Half-Moon Mill, so the bandits had intended to investigate there.
Head to Half-Moon Mill and search under the bridge to find a chest containing Joften's Notes as well as other loot. Reading the journal will complete the quest and allow you to craft Golden/Dark equipment once you have the Daedric Smithing perk.
The chest and the note will be there regardless of whether the quest has been started, so if the player did not loot the note that starts the quest and the Saints Bandit Leader's corpse despawned, they can still learn Golden and Dark smithing.

- Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g.,
<Alias=LocationHold>
) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game. - Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering
setstage ccBGSSSE025_MiscQuest_GSDSGearBook stage
, wherestage
is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages, but it is possible to clear all stages of the quest usingresetquest ccBGSSSE025_MiscQuest_GSDSGearBook
