No skeleton key?Edit

Why is that under Misc but not Keys? 173.236.136.13 02:02, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

Actually, the proper entry is under Artifacts (and the redirect now points there). However, as far as game mechanics are concerned, the Skeleton Key is classified as a miscellaneous item (MISC record) rather than a key (KEYM record), which is why it is listed that way on the site. --NepheleTalk 03:05, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

Shaman keyEdit

I keep getting these from killing falmer but what is it for? Kimi the Elf 11:49, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

They open locked chests found in Falmer-inhabited caves, one example: Stillborn Cave. --Jreynolds2Talk Contrib E-mail 02:42, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

What do they open?Edit

We should add what they open as well.--89.212.123.233 21:25, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

I have similar thoughts. This page might be taken as a guide to improving it: Oblivion:Keys. An ambitious project, however, which I'm currently more comfortable identifying than executing. Jreynolds2 05:50, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
The reality is that nearly all of the information on the page will end up being generated automatically from game data. It's just a lower priority than dozens of other tasks. --NepheleTalk 05:57, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. That's useful guidance about improving/expanding this page. Nephele (or another administrator), can you expand on this just a little more?
Personally, I am currently enjoying trying to contribute by rotating among: 1. Looking at the priorities under Helping Out and Task List; 2. Expanding or revising pages as I encounter them while playing; and, 3. Watching pages that I've edited or commented on, so I can learn from feedback/further revisions or continue to try to improve them. This keys page falls under #2 (the funnest category, of course, because I would do it while playing). So, while we are waiting for the lower-priority automatic page generation, I'm inclined (as are at least a couple of others) to add bits of info to the page as I come across keys. Acknowledging that it's not a priority, does it seem particularly wasteful to do this? Or would it interfere with a planned project? I'm curious about Nephele's opinion, in particular, if she sees this.) Unless it's really inefficient to do this, I'd just like to build on what's here from time to time. Finally, if someone who has the skill can copy the template from The Oblivion Keys page, to this one, and populate it with the keys identified on this page, I think I/we can expand it in a better way. But I hope someone who has some relevant knowledge can provide some additional guidance on this idea. --Jreynolds2Talk 04:40, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
I've started me a sandbox on this The Silencer/Sandbox2 but help me. The keys to __ make the K section insanely long so I sorted them by location, but do they go by location only or alphabetical after the location, or will they all go in K section. This should make sense when you see my sandbox. The Silencer 04:02, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
Your current approach looks fine to me, but I guess I'd personally prefer the long K section. From what I can see, it would be long, but I don't think "insanely" so. In any event, unless others give another opinion with a rationale we haven't thought of, I think your work is already such an improvement you could replace the current page with your work as is. Eventually, someone may come up with a better/clearer idea about this issue later, and it can always be reorganized after it "goes live". Terrific work! --JRTalk E-mail 05:01, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
Alrighty then. All by alphabetical excluding Key to, own section at bottom. There are 'Key to Warmaiden's' & 'Key to the Windpeak Inn' is there a difference and which comes first or do 'the' go in the 'T' section. I think its me going insane doing this manually. The Silencer 15:18, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

() "The" should not affect alphabetical order; it should go under "W". This is generally how books, etc. are sorted. --Velyanthe 18:33, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

How about this example, I am doing this off site as its making my browser go slow. The Silencer 20:20, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
Except for info which nedds a lot of work, I can leave my sandbox open for people to add to, the tables seem ready to me. I don't know whether the info already there applies to location found or where to use it. The Silencer 02:26, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
Unless there are objections the I am changing the tables with the ones in my Sandbox on the 25th. The Silencer 03:16, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Solitude Jail KeyEdit

Am I just blind, or is the key to Solitude Jail missing from the list? GrogGrogGrog 16:01, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Whoops my bad, it is called Castle Dour Dungeon key. GrogGrogGrog 16:31, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Lots of infoEdit

The information I have added is from the CS list and is not confirmed in-game, confirmed keys are left alone. The keys I have removed do not appear anywhere in-game, but ones such as Wintersand Manor will be left. The Silencer has spoken 20:11, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

Thats the NPC listed keys added. I'm done for now, can someone check to see if there are any broken links, I caught some but... The Silencer has spoken 22:55, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Arch-Mage's Quarters KeyEdit

This was listed as obtainable from Mirabelle, but it comes from Tolfdir during the Eye of Magnus quest. For now, I replaced Mirabelle with Toldir. Does Mirabelle also have it, and, if so, can you get it from her in some way besides stealing it? --JRTalk E-mail 13:08, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

I just checked the CK, and it looks like Tolfdir does give the key to the player during the Eye of Magnus quest (with the line, "Here, consider these yours. And the Arch-Mage's quarters as well. I shall be here for advice, should you need me."). Mirabelle Ervine does not have the key nor does she ever give it to the player (nor does anyone else, for that matter), so it looks like that was just an error. • JATalk 14:35, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

Irkngthand (spelling probably) Consortium KeyEdit

Can anyone tell me what this does? I constantly find it added to my inventory during my playthroughs, though I have not noticed when and thus been able to find the cause. Seeing as how I am NOWHERE close to the quest involving that ruin, I'm curious as to what it does. It could be related to me doing thieves guild minor quests but I don't know.--Catmaniac66 (talk) 21:50, 30 December 2012 (GMT)

The key is found on a bandit in Radlbthar. The only mention of the instance is on the quest Mourning Never Comes, so the bandit may not be present before then. There is no lock that requires the key in Irkngthand, though it may open a lock that is pickable. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 14:07, 13 January 2013 (GMT)

Dawnguard CachesEdit

The Dawnguard Cache Key listed on this page has additional notes listing the locations of each cache. There is a lot of information in that cell, and I have more information to add: That the lockboxes themselves do not appear ingame until the note (The Orders carried by Lynoit, Saliah, Hakar) describing their location are looted and read (opened) by the player.

However I am hesitant to add this information to this page, as none of this really belongs on a page devoted to keys, and it would make that row even larger. The Dawnguard Caches really need their own page for this information.. -Trogdor — Unsigned comment by 99.141.61.46 (talk) at 00:39 on February 4, 2013

unobtainableEdit

Many of the keys are marked as unobtainable while the wax key perk will give you the key. I feel there should be a footnote or simply change the unobtainable notes to "Wax Key Perk" or something similar. But since I'm not sure if any of the keys listed are actually unobtainable (I'm not skilled at all with CK) I'm hesitant to make the changes. I realize that there is already a wax key perk note at the top of the page, the reason I'm saying this is the keys aren't actually unobtainable. Mikeyboy52 (talk) 13:49, 5 February 2013 (GMT)

Yes, those notes should be tweaked. Of course the wax key perk will only help if there actually is a lock the key in question would open. --Alfwyn (talk) 13:57, 5 February 2013 (GMT)

Confiscated Goods KeyEdit

I believe the Confiscated Goods Key that can be pickpocketed from Anuriel at Mistveil Keep unlocks the confiscated goods chest in the Guard's tower just outside the main gate of Riften. I wasn't able to check because I didn't have the key with me but it's the only confiscated goods chest I've been able to find in Riften. — Unsigned comment by PhoenixAvis (talkcontribs) at 00:06 on 14 April 2013

I tried the Confiscated Goods Key on all three Confiscated Goods chests, as well as the prisoner belongings chest and evidence chest in the Riften Jail, all with no success. I think this may be one of those keys with no use, but I want to check a couple more places before I call it worthless. Chocoholic (talk) 10:45, 30 May 2014 (GMT)
Looking in the Creation Kit, it looks like there's nothing using it. The only reference I see to it is the one that adds it to Anuriel's inventory. Robin Hood  (talk) 22:46, 30 May 2014 (GMT)

non-lore?Edit

i think that the link for king Olaf's treasure room should be to the undead version in the game instead of the Lore version in the game. — Unsigned comment by 70.181.43.43 (talk) at 20:40 on 9 October 2013‎

Riften Jail KeyEdit

I've added a VN tag to one of the Riften Jail Keys because it's a little confusing in the CK. It looks like if you acquire the key, the jail cell is automatically unlocked without ever actually having to use the key. I don't see any way of acquiring the key other than pickpocketing it, though, and it looks like only one specific guard (or generic guard type?), the Imperial Guard Jailor has it, along with having the other version of a Riften Jail Key as well. (And if that's the case, why does this one matter, since the other one opens everything where this one opens nothing except maybe the jail cell itself?) It seems like perhaps this key is or was involved in some kind of quest that got you a pass out of the jail, but it doesn't look like that's actually implemented. I don't think any of my games has Riften under Imperial control, so if someone could look into this and see if there's more to be figured out here, or if this version of the key can actually be acquired, that'd be great. For now, I've marked it as opening nothing since, even if you acquire it, technically speaking, the key itself isn't opening anything, it's the act of acquiring it that opens the jail cell. NPC keys?Edit

Greeting, all. This is a really simple question, but I was wondering if NPC schedules are affected at all by taking away their keys. IF I, for example, pickpocket or remove via CK Adisla's farm key, would she be locked out of her farm, or does the presence/absence of a key only affect the player? -Anonymous

If it's like Oblivion (which in this aspect it appears to be), it sometimes does. If you are watching them, they may sometimes stop where they are instead of going towards the door they were supposed to go to if they had the key (but then again, sometimes they travel through a door without the key). If you are not watching them (you are in a different zone) they will get to their destination eventually. So you could steal a key and watch someone for days and they never go inside their house, but if you fast travel to another area and come back, you may find them inside the house, so they got in somehow. When you came back to the area, and the game loads the zone, the game says to itself "at this time of day the character should be inside their house", so that is where the game puts them. Brand-Shei's Strongbox KeyEdit

I picked a East Empire Strongbox in Ravenrock Mine on Solstheim and got a key to Brand-Shei's Strongbox. I haven't encountered any EAC strongboxes yet so I don't know if this unlocks those or just Brand-Shei's strongbox. Korra II A Royal 07:52, 20 January 2020 (GMT)
