Frostbite Spiders are giant spiders native to Skyrim and its surrounding islands, such as Bleakrock Isle and Solstheim.[1][2] As their name implies, they are largely immune to the cold. Frostbite spiders most often make their lairs in caves, covering their nests in large webs, and preying upon creatures who venture into their caverns seeking shelter. When food is especially scarce, they venture out to hunt for prey in the wilderness.[3] They spit poisonous frostbite venom at their prey from a distance, and leap at them to attack with pincers if they get too close. These spiders usually take on a brown and grey coloration, although they can also be blue.[1][4][2]

Uses and CultureEdit

Frostbite Venom is often harvested from the spiders for use as a poison.[3][5] While this is most often done by harvesting their remains, very little venom is obtained this way. As such, obtaining it from a captured live frostbite spider is considered more beneficial in the long run.[6] Spider eggs can be taken from the egg sacs in their nests for use in alchemy.[7]

Frostbite spiders have some level of intelligence, as such, they are capable of being taught to obey certain orders.[6] The cave-dwelling Falmer are known to tame them in addition to Chaurus.[1] Circa 2E 582, a Nord member of the Fighters Guild named Hlokela had taken to breeding and training frostbite spiders as hunting companions. However whenever she tried to leave Solitude, someone would kill the spiders accompanying her, mistaking them for pests.[8] Eventually she moved out of the city and began giving out her trained spiders to adventurers as pets.[9] Gabriella, a member of the Dark Brotherhood, kept a frostbite spider as a familiar.[10]:315
