Magnate (formerly Lieutenant) Lein-Barduik was a former bodyguard of the heir to the Akaviri Potentate, Proconsul Beloren-Kaie and a founder of the Hakoshae. He was the ancestor of Magnate Feina-Darak, who governed the settlement of Hakoshae as of 2E 582.[1][2]
HistoryEdit
Little is known of the past of the Lein-Barduik except that he served as the personal bodyguard of Proconsul Beloren-Kaie, an heir of Savirien-Chorak until he ran away when his master was assassinated by the member of the Morag Tong,[2] Methas Daram,[3][4] at some point after the death of the Savirien-Chorak in 2E 430[5] or 2E 431.[6] Claiming his name and title, Lein-Barduik escaped together with other Akaviri refugees,[2] who sought refugee during the brief reign of Emperor Attrebus, whose decree was to persecute the remaining Akaviri, eventually driving them out of the Imperial City and into the Anequina in the northern parts of the Elsweyr, where the Khajiit granted them asylum across the region.[7] Under the guise of the Proconsul he founded the town of Hakoshae, along the Rim Territories south of Rimmen.[2]
To continue their Akaviri tradition, Magnate Lein-Barduik began their first Proving Festival, where the people must prove themselves to their ancestors. The Proof of Reverence involves placing a paper lotus into the Darkarn river, notifying one's ancestors of participating in the festival. The Proof of Strength involves collecting a nearby flower that grows in a senche-lion lair and the Proof of Wisdom requires solving a riddle.[1] In the final phase of the festival, the participants ask their ancestors to judge whether they have honored them worthily and dutifully.[8] In fact, the ancient Akaviri rites invoked by the Proving Festival in this stage can compel the ancestor spirits to enter the realm of the living and confront their descendants directly.[2] Lein-Barduik was confronted by Beloren-Kaie, who scorned him for his betrayal. In response, Barduik cast him back into the realm of the dead, where he never saw him again. From then, the Magnate canceled the Proving Festival and left it forgotten to the people. The Magnate later passed away, and his lineage continued to rule over Hakoshae.[2] He was buried in the Hakoshae Tombs.[9][10]
LegacyEdit
As of 2E 582, roughly a century after his times the town of Hakoshae was governed by his descendant Magnate Feina Darak. She and her ancestors believed that they descended from the Beloren-Kaie, however, it was mostly kept in secrecy, due to the threat of the Morag Tong.[3] On a fateful day, she found a lost text referencing the Proving Festival and commenced the town's first festival since Lein-Barduik's time. During the festivities, she was abducted by the spirit of Beloren-Kaie, who was summoned during the rites and taken to the Hakoshae Tombs during the Proving Festival festivities, where he revealed the truth behind the town's founding. At the same time, a grandson of the Proconsul's assassin, Ashur of the Quiet Blade arrived in Hakoshae, to learn whether the rumor that Chorak's lineage was still alive. Enlisting the help of a wandering traveler, the two investigated Hakoshae, while the latter partook in the Proving Festival. The investigation took them into the tombs where they encountered the spirit of Lein-Barduik, who unsuccessfully attempted to stop Ashur and the warrior from learning the truth. Ultimately Feina-Darak was spared, announced her true heritage, and renounced her title as Magnate. The inhabitants of Hakoshae, however, convinced her to stay as the Magnate due to her talent as a leader, despite her heritage. The festival continued, Ashur left Hakoshae knowing that his grandfather's legacy was preserved and the truth behind Lein-Barduik's machinations was revealed.[1][11]
