The Spellscar is a large onyx pillar that is associated with the Celestial Mage's Staff. In 2E 578,[1][2] the Mage constellation disappeared from the sky, and with it the Staff fell to Nirn on top of a settlement in Lower Craglorn, shattering into onyx shards that began to emit elemental surges of magic,[3] devastating the area.[4][5] The area of magical contamination around the black pillar became known as the Spellscar. The largest pillar was also colloquially known as the Mage's Staff, which was the name given to the plane located inside the obelisk that was releasing all the magic.[6] Similar to what the Mage's violent outbursts warped the Aetherian Archive upper levels into,[7] the Spellscar's instabilities were caused by the unstable core of the Mage's Staff, which releases dangerous amounts of magicka.[6]
Many atronachs were seemingly summoned by the elemental storms coming from the Spellscar and its shards. Magic-addicted spellfiends also swarmed the shards, driven mad by the erratic magic of the area.[6] That magical aura has also corrupted various creatures local and passing, turning their skin purple.[8][9] Other common afflictions were turning your skin into the onyx rock that the Spellscar was made of, chanelling crackling elemental magic throughout your body.[10][11][12] The area also seemed to conjure celestial star-born creatures.[13]
Some people scavenged the black shards from the site,[3][14] and even made them into weapons.[15] The material the shards are made of is celestial in nature, as it is sometimes assossiated with the Steed constellation.[16]
