Oblivion talk:The Purification
Rufio's GhostEdit
Rufio's ghost proved to be the most useless summoning I've ever had. — Unsigned comment by Klash72 (talk • contribs) on 7 August 2006
- I second this as well, I figure with the way Lucien described it this would be a manslaughter. Rufio's Ghost floated about for a few minutes in a room of three, really just bumping into everyone like a drunken sailor. A huge disappointment in every aspect. --AlbinoMudcrab 11:39, 13 August 2006 (EDT)
-
- Rufio's Ghost won't attack on his own, he'll only attack to defend you or himself. Use him AFTER you're in combat with one or more Dark Brothers or Sisters. Deadlykris 14:03, 29 May 2009 (EDT)
The PurificationEdit
"Of Secret and Shadow" is the short quest in which you have to go to Fort Farragut and meet Luciene Lachante. The main task you need to complete is named "The Purification". All the short quests in DB line (interludes like "Welcome to the Family", "Blood of the Damned" etc.) are not described, so why this one is? --Den 01:11, 31 October 2006 (EST)
- Yes that's correct the really quest name is "The Purification" not "of Secert and Shadow" this article should renamed to "The Purification".--71.170.41.7 21:46, 2 March 2007 (EST)
- This has confused me a few times as well. I agree with the above comment. Does anyone disagree? --GuildKnight 12:45, 12 March 2007 (EDT)
- Yep, looks like it should really be The Purification, if someone is up for renaming the page and fixing all the links to the page. --Nephele 18:51, 14 March 2007 (EDT)
- Sorry, I should have been clearer ;) It's best to move a page (using the move tab at the top of the page) than to cut and paste all the contents into a new page. By using the move function, all of the page history gets preserved. Also the quest name is "The Purification", not just "Purification", so I went ahead and did a move to "The Purification"... which means all the links need to be changed again :| --Nephele 21:07, 14 March 2007 (EDT)
- Figures... And here I was thinking, "Wow, that was quick and easy!" Well, it's done now. Nothing links to "Purification". --GuildKnight | Talk (contribs) 21:37, 14 March 2007 (EDT)
- Quick and easy? Around here? ;)
- Thanks for taking care of all the links again... and thanks for putting up with my obsessions over details ;) --Nephele 23:16, 14 March 2007 (EDT)

TelaendrilEdit
I killed telaendril a little early this quest, and during the fight she was going through the motions of shooting at me, but nothing was coming out of her bow amd when i looted her she had 189 arrows — Unsigned comment by 71.170.219.95 (talk) at 04:13 on 17 July 2007
- A little out of place for this comment. I've seen this happen with many various NPC archers. Not sure what causes it. Deadlykris 21:58, 11 July 2009 (UTC)
Who Was It?Edit
I've done this quest twice now with different characters, and I am yet to follow the plot of it. It was my original understanding that the purification was part of Ballimont's plan to destroy the DB; by claiming there is a traitor within it. But that doesn't sit right with Luciene's involvement. So is there some sort of clue or evidence as to who it actually is? Or am I just being really dumb and missing something very obvious? ;) — Unsigned comment by 87.127.79.8 (talk) at 22:04 on 1 October 2007
- It was Mathieu Bellamont. As I read it, various DB members have been getting killed and it's happening because of information only the Black Hand and the Cheydinhal Sanctuary dwellers possess. The BH consider themselves above suspicion so assume it's the sanctuary people - hence the Purification. Lucien is simply the speaker in charge of that particular sanctuary; doubtless Bellamont is trying to deflect blame onto somebody else. --RpehTalk 00:20, 2 October 2007 (EDT)
-
- Bellamont used to be a member of the Cheydinhal Sanctuary, he was promoted to Silencer and subsequently sent to serve another Speaker somewhere else. So while the taint of betrayal (and the blood trail that the Black Hand picked up on, apparently) did originate at Cheydinhal, the fact that you didn't get the traitor during the Purification is blamed solely on grievously poor timing.—Dark Spark 20:13, 4 January 2008 (EST)
Dark MinionEdit
I recall reading something about that you don't have to kill the Dark Minion, but that it WILL attack you if you assault a sanctuary dweller in it's presence (since the minion is in the same faction as the NPC's needing sudden death). Would it be useful to mention that in the article (providing I read and recalled it right)? - Korunox 19:53, 23 February 2008 (EST)
- You probably read about it here, as it's already in the article: "Just be careful not to attack one while the Dark Guardian (the skeleton that patrols the entrance hall) is nearby, as it will turn hostile toward you." --Gaebrial 08:06, 25 February 2008 (EST)

- Awww, awkward.. Sorry to waste your time then ;) - Korunox 11:58, 25 February 2008 (EST)
Bizarre Occurrence ~ Explanation NeededEdit
When I did this quest, I decided to poison Gogron with a poisoned apple, putting it in his inventory after removing all other food and drink sources. I waited until he went to eat, but Ocheeva suddenly attacked him! Gogron retaliated, but eventually died. I suspected that Ocheeva may have killed Gogron for the apple, the only food source available, but she did not remove it from his inventory. Does anybody have any idea what happened? --Merco 08:02, 15 March 2008 (EDT)
- Not really, but when my character joined the DB and spoke to Ocheeva, once Telaendril and Gorgon had finished their conversation, Ocheeva and Telaendril started fighting. I think Ocheeva started it, which is odd given her aggression rating of 30. Mind you, my game is heavily modded, so something else may have modified her. Are you running any major mods, such as OOO? --Gaebrial 09:52, 17 March 2008 (EDT)
-
- I can't run any mods, as I have Oblivion on PS3. I was using the GOTY edition, though, so this may have affected the situation. --Merco 12:40, 17 March 2008 (EDT)
-
-
- This also occurred in my game under similar circumstances. Once I began killing off members (I believe Antoinetta was first), i return to the main hall a few moments later and Ocheeva is attacking Gogron. Perhaps this is meant to suggest that Ocheeva suspects Gogron of the murder, perhaps due to a low disposition. In my version, Ocheeva is easily killed by Gogron. These little unexplained bits of the AI perhaps are meant to make the game feel more dynamic. — Unsigned comment by 209.134.75.234 (talk) at 07:01 on 15 May 2008

-
- I think it's because there is no other food. I gave Antoinetta a poison apple and Ocheeva attacked her. I took all of the food from the sanctuary earlier, so I believe that's what she was after.--gooden001 December 2009

-
- I had the same thing happen but my situation leads me to believe there may be suspicion of a purfication? Because when Ocheeva randomly attacted Gorgon there was no placing of an apple of taking of food on my part. I was just chilling waiting for a good time to cut him to ribbons when ocheeva just pounced on him. Gorgon was an easy kill after the fight but this is still very strange. - Jakeh56 12:19 13 Jan 2010. — Unsigned comment by Jakeh56 (talk • contribs) at 01:20 on 13 January 2010

Feeling Lonely?Edit
Once you're finished with all the Dark Brotherhood quests, the sanctuary is pretty void and bare. A thing I like to do is, during this purification quest, kill one of the members, and then use the resurrect command to bring them back. This means they'll go about their daily business like nothing has happened, and will still technically count as dead. Sometimes when resurrected they will still be auto-aggressive towards you, so be sure to kill them properly the first time. This also allows you to purchase Mraaj-Dar's stuff whenever you want. — Unsigned comment by 121.44.75.12 (talk) at 01:57 on 18 April 2008
- Ha Ha! I never would have thought of that. Perhaps you should add it to the notes section of the quest? --Ocylith 22:14, 17 April 2008 (EDT)
-
- As much as I like the occasional plot twists, I'd prefer if there were alternatives to killing everyone. Making personal decisions (such as disobeying orders) and solving the mystery of the killer and perhaps sparing certain characters (as you may do for Scar-tail). The empty sanctuary doesnt feel quite the same. On a related note, anyone know if the Sanctuary containers are safe once the deed is done? — Unsigned comment by 209.134.75.234 (talk) at 06:52 on 15 May 2008
-
-
- I only checked some of them, but looking at the Construction Set, it appears as though any of the containers that belong to someone (like Vincente's desk) will not respawn. The obvious method to check this out for yourself, since scripts and the like could concievably alter behaviour, is to empty everything out after the Sanctuary is yours, save the game, then just wait three days to see which ones respawn and which ones don't. You can re-load to avoid the 3-day skip, though it's almost never really a concern anyway. --Robin Hood (Talk • E-mail • Contribs) 12:36, 22 May 2008 (EDT)

Voranil, what a fighter!Edit
Obscure... I was in the Cheydinhal Bridge Inn waiting for Telaendril to return to the sanctuary. Suddenly, after I waited a few hours, Telaendril gets into a fight with, as unlikely as it may sound, the pompous owner of Riverview, none other than Voranil. I just watched and waited until the were done fighting. Eventually, Voranil kills Telaendril with his bare fists! I must have underestimated him. Anyway, why did this happen? I'm not sure which one started the fight or whether this happened due to Telaendril becoming hostile torwards someone else and Voranil rushing to help that someone else.Nifhelton 18:54, 6 June 2008 (EDT)
- Telaendril was probably just another victim of Oblivion's AI system. She tried to steal something to eat (because she has low Responsibility) and Voranil turned hostile on her because he had a low disposition towards her. Best guess. Vesna 13:37, 7 June 2008 (EDT)
SighEdit
- Sigh, Teinaava was my friend. Any suggestions on how to bring him back?
mabye like, an out-of-the Dark Brotherhood kinda mod. wearing normal clothing... (same dialogue)^^ --Ptowery 23:36, 13 October 2008 (EDT)
Bug ConfirmationEdit
I've moved this bug here from the article:
-
- Ensure that you wait for the quest cue to appear before leaving the sanctuary, after having read the note from Lucien. If you don't, the quest will not update, Lucien will not appear at Fort Farragut and the Dark Brotherhood quest line cannot be completed.
I can't see anything in the scripting that would require you to be in the sanctuary after reading the note. Furthermore, I'm pretty sure that one of my characters didn't read the note until half-way to Fort Farragut. So it's not clear to me that this bug description is providing accurate information on what happened, nor accurate advice on how to avoid having a problem. Before being moved back on to the article these inaccuracies need to be fixed. --NepheleTalk 16:36, 25 February 2009 (EST)

- I'm adding a Good Question tag because this has already been flagged up as a console problem and obviously affects more than one person. I can't see an obvious reason why it should happen but it's worth looking into. –Rpeh•T•C•E• 20:06, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

Shadowmere Not AppearingEdit
- (moved from the article)
Shadowmere will not appear if you already have a horse, and killing your horse will not make Shadowmere appear.
This edit added that information, which was subsequently VNed by Gaebrial. I'm moving the whole thing here because a look at the scripts tells me it's not true. The trigger for giving the player ownership of Shadowmere is Lachance's line "From this moment forward, you will walk the shadows as my Silencer", which also advances the player to Silencer rank. The line that enables Shadowmere ("Now go, and may Sithis guide you in this new stage of your life's dark journey.") also sets stage 100 on the quest, completing it. There are no checks for other horses at any point. I suggest the original poster simply hadn't finished the quest properly. –Rpeh•T•C•E• 09:30, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
- I had a horse when I finished the quest and I still got Shadowmere. My old horse just hangs around Fort Farragut. — Unsigned comment by 121.79.1.12 (talk) on 3 February 2010

- Wanted to add a point - Multiple people I know have claimed this bug, only to have me point them to look inside the circle/walls of the ruined tower. it's not waiting outside the secret side entrance where one would expect it to be. — Unsigned comment by 219.90.213.186 (talk) at 16:53 on 27 May 2011 (UTC)

For ShadowmereEdit
Shadowmere doesn't appear if you have a horse, killing will not help, as stated in the article on the quest. I traveled a bit and did a quest, Shadowmere then appeared next to the main entrance, not the tree entrance. ~William~ — Unsigned comment by 68.58.44.170 (talk) on 22 June 2010
- It's nothing to do with already owning a horse. I've always owned a horse by the time I've done this quest and never had this problem. To double-check, I reloaded an old save, made sure I had a horse (I actually had 7) and completed the quest. Sure enough, Shadowmere appeared. rpeh •T•C•E• 12:02, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Lucien Lachance in his own bloodEdit

Antoinetta Marie? wtf?Edit
Well, long before Ive got this far into BHs quest line, I had robbed a few items from the sanctuary, and Marie just rushed attacking me on sight after that, even after killing the Sithis Wrath. But once I have run away through the city, leaving her there attacking the flies, and a guard I crossed just rushed to kill her, anyway, I went back to check that out, they were stuck outside the temple by the Sithis door, I left and kept doing my things, then I noticed she was lying dead right under the stairs to the alternative exit for the sanctuary, figures...
The problem is, she is dead, and I cannot complete this fucking quest due to her early death, it seems the quest wont end... I guess I must use the fucking command on the console...
Another tipEdit
When M'raaj-Dar was training spellcasting my sister pushed Vicente Valtieri in front of him. Vicente evetually died.
Advance quest but actually keep the sanctuary and its NPCs aliveEdit
Instead of using the Kill and Resurrect console commands so to advance in the quest without turning the Sanctuary into a barren and lifless place, (as the Kill and resurrect commands are still having a risk of the killed NPC being registered in the game's engine as -permanently- dead before you resurrect them, despite you was fast). For this reason, I highly recommend the much better and simple SetStage command. Simplier and yet, less risky. --SilentResident 04:19, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

Third purificationEdit
Supposedly, this is the third purification. I believe one of the other times is something about vampires wanting to take over but ultimately failing. What was the other time?
I can't see Lucien!Edit
I can't see him. I used setstage to get to the part where I need to talk to him and get my reward. I went to the fort, and he isn't there! My marker is pointing to the middle of the floor. I waited and waited. He just isn't appearing! Please help!
Mraaj-Dar becoming friendlyEdit
I find it odd that it is not written in the notes section of this that page that Mraaj-Dar becomes friendly with you (100 disposition) during The Purification quest. Is this something worth mentioning? APSX3427 03:25, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
- All members of any guild, including the Dark Brotherhood, will become more friendly towards you as you advance in rank within the guild. It was most likely as a result of your promotion at the end of Permanent Retirement. – Robin Hood↝talk 05:30, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
- I noticed that too. I had the impression it was just to make you feel worse for killing him. The whole time you're there he's a jerk to you, so the player thinks "Well at least I get to kill Mraaj now!" And then he wants to be your friend. — Unsigned comment by 69.250.123.159 (talk) at 16:25 on 1 February 2012
PurificationEdit
I have Noticed In my past few Playthroughs that Telaendril is not needed to be killed for The quest to complete, even with the Unofficial Patch, So I leave her alive and let her do her own thing, I have no idea why she doesn't need to be killed she is part of the sanctuary, I think this is a Bug I would post a link to show but I do not think it is appropriate. — Unsigned comment by Twistybum (talk • contribs) at 05:56 on 3 May 2023 (UTC)
- In the vanilla game, all 7 members of the sanctuary need to be dead in order to complete the quest, including Telaendril. Is she actually alive in your game, or is she simply not in the sanctuary when you kill the others? Note that she is not Essential and can be killed by someone/something else, especially since she leaves the sanctuary and travels to Leyawiin every week. It doesn't matter how she dies, only that she's dead. If she is actually still alive, is it possible you're running another mod which modifies this quest (either intentionally or unintentionally)? Can you reproduce this behaviour in a vanilla game (i.e. without any mods at all)? — Wolfborn(Howl) 07:32, 3 May 2023 (UTC)

- The "bug" isn't fixed because no one has ever reported this before, AFAICT, and it's difficult to see how this is happening. The way the quest works is that the quest script has a counter which is incremented each time a member of the sanctuary dies. The incrementing is done by scripts attached to each member of the sanctuary; the script checks whether the NPC is dead and, if so, adds one to the quest script counter. The counter has to equal 7 in order for the quest script to set the quest stage to 20, and the only way for that to happen is if every member of the sanctuary has died. The fact that you're able to complete the quest with Talaendril still alive indicates a glitch with either the quest script/counter or with Talaendril. Two possibilities: 1) Is this unique to Talaendril? i.e. can you complete the quest by killing Talaendril but leaving one of the other sanctuary members alive? 2) Does your game think Talaendril is dead? You can check this by opening the console and entering
GetDeadCount 251CE
; if the result is anything greater than 0 then Talaendril has died at some point and been ressurected somehow. — Wolfborn(Howl) 05:46, 5 May 2023 (UTC)

- The results say Dead Count: 0.00 I have also never encountered this problem with any others only Taleendril, I tried it again, right after getting out of the sewers, joining the brotherhood and then instantly starting the quest via console and it seems like it didn't break, maybe it has something to do with her leaving the sanctuary causing the problem, I am not sure.
