Where There's a WillEdit
After you speaking with Aquilia Verres, you will be asked to speak with Mizzik Thunderboots in assisting the execution of Lady Weatherleah's will. Your first task will be to find Betu, as he apparently ran off with it and is now somewhere on the estate.
Follow his tracks, you eventually find Betu with a scroll in his mouth and Chef Edric Brussiner nearby:
- Mizzik Thunderboots: "There's Betu! Quick, grab the will while he is occupied!"
- <Betu drops the scroll from his mouth.>
- Betu: [Dog Barking]
- Mizzik Thunderboots: "Quickly, grab the will!"
- Chef Edric Brussiner: "Not now, Betu! Away with you!"
After you grab the Sealed Will, you will be asked to speak with Edric, and then you can follow Mizzik into the manor where he will read out the will. During the reading, Betu will be wandering around the guests and is skittish of the newly returned Uriel Weatherleah:
- Aquilia Verres: "I hope Betu's return means you retrieved the will, Mizzik?"
- Mizzik Thunderboots: "Yes, the will is returned and intact thanks to my assistant."
- Aquilia Verres: "Well, let's get this over with. Read it aloud, Mizzik."
- Mizzik Thunderboots: "Yes, of course. Weatherleah's walls hide a glittering secret. Safely guarded by four loyal paws."
- <Beat.>
- Mizzik Thunderboots: "Do not worry, Mizzik and his assistant will get to the bottom of this."
- Aquilia Verres: "I'm sorry, is that … a riddle?"
- Pelena Weatherleah: "This must be some sort of joke!"
- <Betu wanders around and shies away from Uriel.>
- Uriel Weatherleah: "There he is! My faithful friend … oh!"
- Aquilia Verres: "Strange. Betu doesn't seem too fond of you, cousin."
- Uriel Weatherleah: "Nonsense. I'm sure Betu just needs time to remember me. Isn't that right, boy?"
- Mizzik Thunderboots: "Feel free to speak with the others, but join me in the study when you are ready."
- <Mizzik leaves and enters the nearby study.>
After you investigate study and find several suspicious letters, Mizzik will have you speak with everyone on the Estate. As you go to speak with Groundskeeper Otho Florius about the day of Lady Weatherleah s death, you will find him with Betu, having just washed him:
- Groundskeeper Otho Florius: "There you go, Betu! Baths aren't so bad."
Your discussion with Otho leads you to search the library where Lady Weatherleah was found, and you are soon asked to search outside, as one of the library windows is broken.
When you get there, you will find Betu sniffing at the ground below the window:
- Mizzik Thunderboots: "Betu? What is he sniffing?"
- <Betu digs at the ground and reveals a key.>
- Mizzik Thunderboots: "Betu found a key? And look, it seems Betu wants us to follow him."
Once you collect the Gilded Key, Betu will run off and you can chase him to a memorial to Uriel Weatherleah. Chef Edric's body will be next to it, apparently have commited suicide with poison after writing a confession letter.
Speaking with Mizzik, he will point out the holes in this story and is certain that Chef Edric's claim that Uriel was an imposter was correct. You then speak with Uriel and Pelena, informing them of Edric's death. With the latter, Pelena claims that she was going to have tea with Lady Weatherleah that morning, but forgot about it at the last moment. She then suggests Otho could have been the one to kill Lady Pelena as he would have brewed the tea.
Going outside, you will find Otho searching for Betu again. He has a conflicting account of events and recognize the Gilded Key as being for Lady Weatherleah's bedroom. Searching the bedroom, you find residue of the same poison used to kill Edric and a Letter to Pelena, which proves that Uriel is an imposter and that Pelena had her husband killed years ago. It appears that Lady Weatherleah found out and confronted her about this.
After discussing this with Mizzik, you hear screaming from downstairs. Rushing to the scene, you find Uriel—actually Theophan Pictor—dead and Betu on the ground nearby:
- Aquilia Verres: "He's dead! Someone killed him!"
- Groundskeeper Otho Florius: "Betu? Betu, what's wrong boy?"
- Aquilia Verres: "Nobody leaves until Mizzik finds out what happened! Traveler, there's something by the body, quick."
When you check Betu, you will find Foul Residue around his mouth, which matches the poison that killed Edric and Lady Weatherleah and that Pelena forcibly fed it to Betu. Speaking with Otho, he will recognize the poison as what they use for pest control around the Estate, and urges you to get the Medicinal Herbs from the pantry to treat Betu.
Returning with the antidote, you can feed it to Betu:
- Groundskeeper Otho Florius: "Betu! He's recovering. The herbs must be working."
- <Betu gets to his feet.>
- Betu: "[Dog Barking]"
- Mizzik Thunderboots: "Wonderful news. Traveler, let's discuss the note you found with our imposter."
Once you talk to Mizzik about the letter and confirm that Pelena Weathleah is the killer, Betu will run off suddenly:
- Groundskeeper Otho Florius: "Betu, what is it? Where are you going?"
- Mizzik Thunderboots: "Quickly, follow that dog!"
Following Betu into the basement, he will be scratching at the door leading to the cavern below the Weatherleah Estate. You and Mizzik can then chase after him as he tracks down Pelena. Eventually Betu will have reached Pelena and she is annoyed that he still lives:
- Pelena Weatherleah: "Damned dog! How are you still alive?"
After talking with Pelena, Otho will arrive, demanding to know why she hurt Betu. You can then talk to Mizzik, who will be happy that the murderer has been found but acknowledges neither of you found Lady Weatherleah's fortune during the investigation. At this, Betu will approach you with something in his mouth:
- Groundskeeper Otho: "What have you got there, boy?"
- Mizzik Thunderboots: "It seems Betu has brought us something."
- <Betu drops a Dusty Golden Goblet at your feet.>
- Mizzik Thunderboots: "Betu, where did you find this? Betu?"
- <Betu runs offer down a tunnel.>
- Mizzik Thunderboots: "Otho, escort Pelena back to the manor. We will follow the dog!"
Following after Betu, you will be led to a small treasure trove and Note from Lady Weatherleah which explains her final wishes. With the letter in hand, you can return to the manor where you will find Pelena tied up with Aquilia, Otho and Betu around her. Handing the letter over to Aquilia, she will announce that Lady Weatherleah made Betu, Edric and Otho the inheritors of her fortune.
After you have completed the quest, the following will happen:
- Aquilia Verres: "I've always preferred cats, but you've made a good argument for dogs, Betu."
- <Betu approaches Aquilia.>
- Mizzik Thunderboots: "This one thinks Betu likes you!"
- Aquilia Verres: "Oh? Well you do seem like a very good boy! I'll be sure to order a lifetime supply of steak dinners!"
