King Ranser

King Ranser was the Breton ruler of Shornhelm when High King Emeric was elected as the leader of the Daggerfall Covenant. When Emeric married Maraya instead of his daughter, Princess Rayelle, he announced war against him.

After multiple defeats, he was cornered at the ruins now known as the Traitor's Tor by an army of Orcs led by Kurog gro-Orsinium. He later died at the hands of his trusted military advisor, General Dathieu, who realized that Ranser was going insane.

Quest-Related EventsEdit

While reliving the events of one of Ranser's soldiers during their final hours. You can first come across King Ranser surveying the battle through the tower window, he will order you to get back to the fight if you try and speak with him.

"Get back to the fight, Lieutenant! We will win this day, one way or another."

You can then report to General Dathieu, who will order you to burn sachets in braziers around the fort as per Ranser's orders. After this you can report to the king.

"Are you ready for glory, Lieutenant? Our greatest hour is at hand. Those green-skinned beasts think they have us defeated; they'll soon realize how incredibly wrong they are.
Have the contents of Reezal-Jul's packets been poured into the braziers?"
Yes, but nothing happened.
"Not yet, but it will. We will charge the enemies' ranks and they will see what true determination means.
I've sent orders for Captain Taern and the King's Guard to charge the breach in the north wall. Tell the general to prepare his troops as well."
You want us to prepare to charge the Orcs' ranks?
"Are you daft, Lieutenant, or just a coward? Don't make me repeat myself.
Tell General Dathieu to prepare the soldiers to charge against the Orcs to the south. I will retrieve my sword from the north tower and join you on the battlefield."
Yes, Your Majesty. I'll tell the general.

Speaking to him again:

"Rest assured. I will lead us to victory. You have my word."

After speaking the General and attempting to delay Captain Taern, you can return to the town to find the King and General arguing.

King Ranser: "Stop acting like a coward, Dathieu! I am your king and I will lead you to victory today."
General Dathieu: "Your Majesty, you've clearly lost your mind. I'm sorry, but you leave me no choice."
<General Dathieu then stabs Ranser in the back. The king falls to the ground and Dathieu walks away.>
General Dathieu: "It is done. No further lives need be thrown away today."
<Red mist pools around King Ranser's body and he transforms into a skeleton. General Dathieu clutches at his head while body begins to burn as he is cursed.>
King Ranser: "Traitor! But your feeble betrayal won't stop Reezal-Jul's magic! We shall live forever, but not you. I curse you and will scatter your bones! Die, you treacherous dog!"

You will encounter the undead King Ranser in the real world after you find General Dathieu's bones. With the skeletal General in tow, you can confront the former King and put him down permanently to break the curse on the ruins.

General Dathieu: "Ranser! You madman! It's time to finish this!"
King Ranser: "I couldn't agree more. I'll shatter your bones this time, Dathieu."
