Mirili Ulven is a Dark Elf sorceress living in the settlement of Highcross. She is very focused on her research into the life forms of the Shivering Isles, its weather changes, and the cycles of the moon and stars.
She wears a mage's robe and a pair of huntsman moccasins. She is equipped with an enchanted dagger and carries her key and a variable amount of gold. Mirili possesses a unique Fortify Health ability (+150 pts), which she loses once you complete her related quest. She also knows many spells from different schools of magic:
- Three Novice-level elemental damage Destruction spells: Spark, Snowball and Flare.
- Two Drain Fatigue Destruction spells: Major Enervation and Dire Enervation.
- Two random leveled Restoration and Alteration spells (both major).
- A powerful novice Paralyze Lesser Power, which is different from a regular Paralyze spell. Its base magicka cost is 35 and it paralyzes an enemy for 300 seconds.
Related QuestsEdit
- Taxonomy of Obsession: Help a Dunmer finish her research.
Quest-Related DialogueEdit
Taxonomy of ObsessionEdit
When first spoken to:
- "You're new here, so I'll try to be patient with you. I am compiling a taxonomy of every living thing in the Shivering Isles, the weather, changes in the moon and stars, and their interrelationships. I must not be interrupted! My work requires the highest degree of concentration. I hope I won't have to repeat myself."
-
- Sure, whatever.
- "I can see that the scope of my research is far beyond the limited understanding of a cretin such as yourself. Let me make it very simple for you. Don't speak to me. Ever. Now, thanks to your rude interruption, I have to start my day's work all over again."
-
- Fascinating. Tell me more.
- "I have no time for idle chatter with dilettantes. When I'm finished with the Encyclopedia Sheothia, you may study it to your heart's content."
If you asked her to tell you more she can be further spoken to:
- Mirili's Research
- "You're offering to help me with my research? Well... I suppose I could find a use for you, despite your lack of training. Here's the list of things I need. Get me everything on it. Try to remember where you found it so you can tell me. It's important." (Disposition > 60)
If your disposition < 60:
- "My work is far too important to trust to you."
She will then hand you over a list, if she is spoken to again about her research at this point:
- "Do you have any new items from the list?"
-
- I have some interesting specimens.
- "Excellent. I'll just take them. These are perfect for my research! Thank you. Now go. Shoo!"
-
- No, I haven't found any.
- "No luck, huh? Well, I have to get back to my research."
After finding and giving a few of the wanted ingredients to Mirili, she will remind you to ask her about her bestiary:
- "Remind me to ask you about my bestiary. In the meantime, what have you found for me?"
- Mirili's Bestiary
- "My bestiary? Oh, yes. I want to start one. I'd like a Baliwog to begin with. You just get it close to me and I'll take care of subduing it. I might accidentally kill it. If that happens, just bring me another. Once I have it, I'll make sure it's worth your while. I have some spells I can sell you if you have no way to command the beasts yourself."
Depending upon skill level, she will offer the spells Mirili's Apprentice Command, Mirili's Journeyman Command, and Mirili's Expert Command:
- Buy a spell
- "Would you like one of these?"
-
- 500 gold for the Apprentice Command
- "This spell might do for a Baliwog or an Elytra Hatchling. Don't try it on anything tougher, though. When you bring them to me, I intend to wait until the spell wears off to capture them. I enjoy the challenge."
-
- 1000 gold for the Journeyman Command
- "I might as well have given it to you at that price, but it's worth it for my bestiary. When you bring them to me, I intend to wait until the spell wears off to capture them. I enjoy the challenge."
-
- 2000 gold for the Expert Command
- "A bargain at twice the price. When you bring them to me, I intend to wait until the spell wears off to capture them. I enjoy the challenge."
Stage-Dependent DialogueEdit
At different stages in the Main Quest, Mirili will share different rumors with you and other NPCs:
- They say there's a newcomer about. I wonder where he's from?
- I'll have to update my encyclopedia. I had an entire volume devoted to the Gatekeeper, and now he's dead.
- I suspect that the Resonator is affecting the migration patterns of baliwogs, but it's going to take years of study to be sure.
- Everyone's talking about Duke Thadon and his Chalice. How tedious. Don't people understand I have important work to finish?
- The palace intrigues of the House of Dementia are of no interest to me.
- People are all excited about the Great Torch being relit. Personally, I don't pay any attention to politics.
- I understand Dementia has a new leader. Not my area of interest, honestly.
- I understand Mania has a new leader. Not my area of interest, honestly.
- All my work on the Fringe... wasted. I'll have to begin my research all over again.
- I'd be very interested in taking a look at this new Gatekeeper. An entirely new form of life!
- The tedious to-ings and fro-ings of the armies of Sheogorath are of no interest to me.
- People act like Sheogorath's disappearance is of some grave significance. But the Shivering Isles are the same as ever, I assure you.
- With the Greymarch ended, I need to devote some serious study to the obelisks. They have proven more interesting than I had thought.
NotesEdit
- When Mirili is plant collecting, it is very easy for her to meet her death as she sometimes strays too close to the Frenzied Camp where she will be attacked by Heretics.
BugsEdit
- As a Sorcerer by class, Mirili does not have Illusion as a major skill. As a result, she will only ever cast Apprentice-level Illusion spells from her leveled list, and even then only from player level 20.
- The Unofficial Oblivion Patch, version 3.5.1, addresses this issue. The Illusion major spell is replaced with a Mysticism major spell.
SpellsEdit
These spells are only buyable after reaching the Bestiary stage of Taxonomy of Obsession and cannot be bought once the quest is completed. The spells must be bought through dialogue options, instead of the usual Spell Service button.

Spell NotesEdit
- The cost for most spells matches the value you would calculate from the Spell Cost equation. In other words, if you were to create the same spell at the Spellmaking Altar it would have the same magicka cost as the built-in spell. However, there are a few notable exceptions, as noted in the tables. Spells that are a bad deal, i.e. more expensive than a custom spell, are in red; spells that are a good deal are in green. The magicka cost if you were to create a custom spell at the Spellmaking Altar is shown in parentheses.
- Cost for spells is dependent upon your skill in the school (as modified by Luck, see Magic Overview). The provided baseline values are the magicka cost when your skill level is 33. For other skill levels the magicka cost can be determined from:
Cost * (1.4 - 0.012 * Skill)
- Level indicates what skill level you must reach (or surpass) in order to use a spell. Skill Level 0-24 = Novice, 25-49 = Apprentice, 50-74 = Journeyman, 75-99 = Expert, 100 = Master
- The base cost in gold that you must pay to purchase a spell is always three times the current magicka cost of the spell, taking into account your character's skill level and Luck. (The actual cost you pay is further increased based on how well you haggle with the merchant). Therefore, if you have any Fortify Skill or Fortify Luck spells/potions handy, you can get significantly better deals when purchasing spells.
