Detailed WalkthroughEdit
Horse TamerEdit
Upon reading Soran's Journal located on Urag gro-Shub's desk in the Arcanaeum, this quest will automatically begin and will direct you to the nearest stables.[verification needed — how is this selected?] You will need to speak with the hostler, i.e. the NPC who sells horses. (NOTE: I received the opportunity at the Whiterun Stables in a new game to buy the map without performing any of the actions previously outlined.) You will be presented with the option to purchase a wild horse map for 250 gold. You will receive both a Map of Wild Horses and a book called Wild Horse Notes. In conjunction with reading the book, the map can be examined in your inventory in order to locate seven wild horses.
Upon making this purchase, this quest will conclude. However, you will then receive seven miscellaneous objectives tasking you with locating and taming every wild horse. The objectives themselves are rather useless as they do not provide a map marker for the individual horses. Instead, you will need to use the map and book to travel to the approximate location and search for the horse. The book itself advises that Detect Life will be useful in carrying out this task. Note that wild horses will flee if you get too close, so it may help to sneak up on them.
To tame a wild horse, you must remain mounted on the horse while it bucks. It has a chance to ragdoll you when bucking, which will force you to chase down the fleeing horse once you get back on your feet. Once mounted for a sufficient length of time, the horse becomes an owned mount. If you switch to a different mount, it will slowly make its way back to the location you originally found it.
Find and tame the Black HorseEdit
This horse can be found northwest of Falkreath, just south of the map marker for Evergreen Grove. The book refers to nearby ruins, presumably referring to the Roadside Ruins to the southeast. This location is close to a necromancer's ritual site, and the resident necromancer might interrupt the taming process if you get too close.
Find and tame the Chestnut HorseEdit
This horse can be found east of Helgen, along the path leading towards Falkreath Stormcloak Camp. It's off of the north side of the road, just under halfway from Helgen to the Falkreath Stormcloak Camp.
Find and tame the Dapple Brown HorseEdit
This horse can be found in the forest south of Solitude Sawmill, across the river but before you reach the dragon mound. This can obviously be a dangerous place to tame a horse if the dragon is still nearby.
Find and tame the Grey Spotted HorseEdit
This horse can be found up the hill to the north of Salvius Farm. Beware the nearby sabre cats who will attack you and the horse if you get too close.
Find and tame the Pale MareEdit
This horse can be found among a group of snowy pines just south of Yngol Barrow.
Find and tame the Red HorseEdit
This horse can be found on the plains of Whiterun Hold, northwest of Whiterun Stables. It is a very easy mount to locate and tame, particularly at the start of the game.
Find and tame the White Spotted HorseEdit
This horse can be found directly west of Stony Creek Cave, west of the road, on a green cliff overlooking the volcanic tundra below. (Map)
NotesEdit
- Each wild horse can be named and saddled, which are two other mechanics added by this Creation. To do this, you must visit a stable with the horse as your active mount.
- Horses on even slight inclines will sometimes throw you further than expected, possibly causing significant damage or killing you.
- Upon arriving near them start sneaking and approach slowly until the option to ride them appears. They'll usually buck around 4-7 times. Once in awhile hard enough to buck you off but not all that often. They'll go off in another direction but as long as you sneak and don't run after them they won't go far.

- Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g.,
<Alias=LocationHold>
) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game. - Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering
