Gilane is one of the eight major cities in the province of Hammerfell,[1] and is located on the south-central coast near the Abecean Sea, across the isthmus toward Hew's Bane.[2] In the Third Era, the city was the seat of power for the eponymous Kingdom of Gilane.[3]
Layout and GeographyEdit
Gilane is situated in southern Hammerfell, just south of the Alik'r Desert.[4][5] Sources from the late Third Era suggest that the Rourken clan's former capital city, Volenfell is located somewhere outside the town.[5] Just further south is an isthmus that connects the mainland with the Hew's Bane peninsula,[2] formerly known as Khefrem's Boot.[6] The main road runs right on it and is surrounded by a rocky mountain pass that begins in Gilane and ends at the Prince's Gate, an old, fortified structure on Hew's Bane.[1][7]
Gilane is specifically on the west side of the isthmus, on the large bay it shares with Hegathe where it has a port.[4][8] Though the city's allegiance is unknown, the southern coast of Hammerfell is predominantly held by the Forebears.[5] Gilane was neighbored by several settlements, such as Hegathe to the far west and Lainebon Place to the northeast.[1]
Notable LocalesEdit
HistoryEdit
When Gilane was founded is unknown, however, the Tavan wave of the Ra Gada was known to have settled this portion of the province.[10] By the late first century of the Third Era in 3E 98, the twenty-one-year-old Prince Cephorus was engaged to the Queen of Gilane, Bianki,[11] and eleven years later, the two were married and had a healthy brood of children.[3][Note 1] His reign over the kingdom was prosperous and his relationship with other kingdoms were peaceful, much like with his siblings and their domains.[12]
When the War of the Red Diamond started in 3E 121, King Cephorus and his Redguard army were at the forefront of the conflict, especially as he re-conquered western High Rock in the summer of 3E 125. Cephorus' armies were focused throughout High Rock and eventually moved back into Hammerfell, where he confronted Uriel III's armies in Ichidag in 3E 127. Cephorus' forces overtook Uriel III and the King arranged his transport to his castle in Gilane, where he would have been put on trial. But before the Emperor arrived, an angry crowd tore through his carriage and killed him. Not long after the incident, King Cephorus was proclaimed the Emperor of Tamriel as Cephorus Septim I.[13][14] By 3E 136, Queen Bianki had passed away and all of her children died during the War of the Red Diamond, and four years later in 3E 140, Emperor Cephorus I passed away himself after falling off a horse.[15]
During the Imperial Simulacrum in the late Third Era, the city-state of Gilane was an active settlement. It was ruled by King Coc and had a rivalry with Hegathe and Taneth.[8] Not much is known about Gilane during the Great War, but by 4E 172, the Aldmeri Dominion claimed the southern coast of Hammerfell and all of its cities, except for the former capital, Hegathe. When the White-Gold Concordat was signed in 4E 175, it marked the official cession of southern Hammerfell to the Thalmor, but five years later in 4E 180, the Redguards reclaimed it after the signing of the Second Treaty of Stros M'Kai. Much of the region was left devastated after the war, however.[16]
Known RulersEdit
- The Third Era
- Unnamed King of Gilane (ca. 3E 80)[17]
- Queen Bianki (fl. 3E 98 – 3E 127)[11] — Bianki was already the Queen of Gilane when she was engaged to the then Prince Cephorus in 3E 98.[11] The two left the throne when Cephorus became the Emperor of Tamriel and moved to the Imperial City.[15]
- King Coc (fl. 3E 389 – 3E 399)[8]
Culture and SocietyEdit
The musk of the local Fennec Fox is made into a perfume that is considered very fashionable for the nobility of southern Hammerfell, including Gilane.[18] Gilane is known to export some of its goods, such as turbaned conical helmets and fine glass goblets with gilt brims.[19][20] Greens seasoned with garlic is local dish in Gilane.[21]
Like other cities on the Hammerfell coast, the Redguards of Gilane observe the 20th of Rain's Hand as the Day of Shame. According to legend, the Crimson Ship, a vessel full of Kothringi victims of the Knahaten Flu first left Black Marsh on the 9th of First Seed and was denied refuge from every port on Tamriel. It was later westbound for the Abecean Sea and was never seen again. It is said to one day return and the Day of Shame was created in remembrance of that.[22]:7[23]
NotesEdit
- Arena was originally conceived as a fighting game featuring a tournament that took the player to each of Tamriel's cities to challenge different gladiatorial teams. According to a file from that stage of development left behind in the final game, Gilane's gladiatorial team would have been called "the Dire Wolves".[UOL 1]
