"I feared—well, what I feared doesn't matter anymore. I'm going to tell you the truth. All of it."
Rinyde has asked me to find her brother Larydel and stop him from joining the House of Reveries. I must audition as well in order to figure out who he is.

Quick WalkthroughEdit

  1. Talk to Rinyde near Rellenthil.
  2. Audition for Alchemy.
  3. Converse with other Hopefuls of the House of Reveries and practice with them.
  4. Help decide the fate of Rinyde's brother.
  5. Speak with Rinyde to close out the quest.

Detailed WalkthroughEdit

Approaching Rellenthil you'll find Rinyde, either at the bridge east of Rellenthil or at the west end of the Manor of Masques. She'll ask for your help to locate her brother, Larydel, and to convince him to give up joining the House of Reveries and join the Sapiarchs instead.

AuditionEdit

To infiltrate the House of Reveries and find Larydel, you will take the role of a Hopeful—that is, someone hoping to join the House of Reveries—by auditioning using magical knives designed to make you look the part of a talented juggler. Your first audition is with Alchemy. You perform without failing for Alchemy; once you've completed your act for the audition, you'll hear the following:

Alchemy: "Well done. Come, talk. No more auditions for today."
Calpydir: "Oh, curses!"
Eafifwe: "Of all the rotten luck!"
Ashalha: "Whew."

After impressing her with your juggling skills, she'll ask you to collect a gryphon feather to help craft your House of Reveries mask. There's a lake near Rellenthil with nesting gryphons. After acquiring this precious item, you can present it to your sponsor. When you return, picking the most flamboyant answer to her question will elicit the most excited response from her. A Hopeful's Mask will be deposited into your Quest Inventory, which you can wear when she asks you to interact with the other Hopefuls to create a brief, silly presentation called the Game of Boasts. To get in the spirit of things, consider wearing the mask and activating the Swashbuckler or Heroic or Minstrel Personality, or any other fun Personality you've acquired.

At this point, you'll want to check in with Rinyde, to let her know how things are going and to ask how you'll be able to recognize Larydel. She will reply, "As twins we share a striking resemblance, but all Hopefuls wear a mask. Still, I have a suggestion. We were attacked by a gryphon when we were little. Larydel pushed me aside to save me, and took a wound to his chest. He still has the scar." She'll also tell you to read her journal to find some clues. If you take a few moments to read it, it reveals that Rinyde is in denial about Larydel's lack of interest in becoming a Sapiarch, and his genuine excitement to join the House of Reveries. Proceed inside the Manor to find Firebird (downstairs), Clever (upstairs), and Feathermoth (in the Dance Studio upstairs). Each will ask you to assist them in practicing for the Game of Boasts. The more outrageous your answers and assistance, the better! The one challenging interaction is to make sure you beat the drum in time with Feathermoth's dancing; choose medium first, then slow, then fast.

You'll also have a chance to ask each Hopeful a question or two. All give cryptic and glamorous, story-worthy answers. Considering the scar on Feathermoth's chest and his confirmation that he has a sister, Feathermoth seems to be a strong contender to be the real Larydel, but nothing is confirmed.

Busted!Edit

Upon returning to check in with Rinyde, you'll find Alchemy instead. She knows everything about what you and Rinyde are up to, points out that Rinyde seems to have no interest in listening to what Larydel wants, and says Larydel has no interest in talking with Rinyde. Alchemy asks out of curiosity if you've guessed which of the three Hopefuls is Larydel. Regardless of your choice, Alchemy is firm that Larydel wishes nothing to do with Rinyde, and she disinvites you from your second audition, the one with Grand Maestro Forte.

Ending the CharadeEdit

X Marks the Spot

After reporting this turn of events to Rinyde, she will become furious and ask you to help her unmask her brother (and potentially the other Hopefuls) during the final audition in front of the Grand Maestro. You will have to decide how to respond. If you warn Alchemy, you'll participate in the audition to thwart Rinyde. To do this, you'll have to stand near the "X" symbols on the stage, each in turn, await your cue, and perform three times successfully. Failure means the audition must begin again. Rinyde's magic will result in simply unmasking you, not the other Hopefuls. If you choose instead not to warn Alchemy, the audition proceeds without you and Rinyde unmasks all the Hopefuls, but Larydel is nowhere to be found. Either way, the Grand Maestro is livid with Rinyde, saying, "Mage! You dare unmask our Hopefuls? Simply unforgivable. You are henceforth banished from Rellenthil. Return, and your freedom shall be forfeit."

Afterward, speaking with Alchemy, you discover that she is Larydel, transformed from a year ago since she left Rinyde as her brother. She regrets not being able to tell Rinyde the truth. Your encouragement can be to either confront Rinyde immediately and tell her everything, or to let Rinyde go join the College of Sapiarchs and write her a letter afterward. Confronting her sister is labeled by the quest as a lie, because it doesn't seem likely Rinyde will be rational about this news, but either choice will have you going out to the beach to talk with Rinyde. Telling Rinyde that Larydel will write her a letter once she's settled in at the College will result in Rinyde leaving to pursue becoming a Sapiarch, uncertain if she'll ever have closure with Larydel.

"I feared—well, what I feared doesn't matter anymore. I'm going to tell you the truth. All of it."

Telling Rinyde that Alchemy wants to speak to her will result in Rinyde pouting about having to listen to Alchemy intead of talking directly with her brother. When Alchemy reveals that she is Larydel, Rinyde is taken aback, but is ultimately supportive. You can listen to their conversation after the quest:

Alchemy: "Rinyde! Wait. We must speak."
Rinyde: "If you wish to speak on Larydel's behalf, speak. I have no time for games."
Alchemy: "I—I must apologize, Rinyde. I wasn't honest with you. Larydel never envied your ability with magic. He feared you wouldn't join the Sapiarchs if he insisted on remaining here."
Rinyde: "How can I believe a word you say? If Larydel truly believed that, he would speak to me himself."
Alchemy: "I am speaking with you, Rinny."
Rinyde: "Larydel? But—but how?"
Alchemy: "I've been a member for over a year now, and I should have never lied to you. I feared, well—what I feared doesn't matter anymore. I'm going to tell you the truth. All of it."
Rinyde: "You had best do so at once, little brother—little sister. If this is truly what you wanted, why not just tell me? All I want is for you to be happy?"
Alchemy: "Then perhaps we can both be happy now, even if we must be apart."
Rinyde: "But first, let us sit by the sea. I feel like there's much for us to talk about."

Alchemy is happy to receive you in her office in the Manor, later. She is in much better spirits, regardless of which course was chosen, because she believes Rinyde will allow her to choose her own path, now. After struggling with her gender dysphoria when she was younger, she feels liberated. She even suggests a new name for herself: Lilindwe.

NotesEdit

  • Alchemy and the applicants won't exist in Rellenthil before starting the quest.
  • Despite Alchemy saying the other Hopefuls are in the Manor of Masques, they won't exist inside until reaching the related objective.
  • Grand Maestro Forte won't exist in Rellenthil before starting the quest or reaching the related objective.
  • Rinyde's refusal to allow her sister to pursue her own path of excellence goes strongly against the Altmer tradition of the Path of Alaxon. This is surprising, considering her own excitement over pursuing perfection in her own way.

BugsEdit

  • Once you put on the Hopeful's Mask, you cannot take it off the same way in the quest items. ?
    • Logging out and back in will remove it until you put it on again.
  • Moving while juggling with the Firebird causes the animation to cancel and a dagger to remain stuck at your feet until the duration of the canceled animation is over. This occurs both in the Manor of Masques building and during the final audition. ?
    • This doesn't occur when performing the same action while auditioning earlier in front of Alchemy.
  • While Alchemy's plan of only unmasking you to protect the other Hopefuls relies on you having your mask on, this part of the quest can still be done while not wearing your Hopeful's Mask. Once her spell goes off, blue swirls appear around your head but nothing else occurs, though the rest of the quest unfolds as if your mask was on. ?
  • Alchemy's pathing breaks as she leaves the final audition for the manor. She can be seen standing still in the courtyard in front of the manor. ?

  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
