Korir is the Nord Jarl of Winterhold who resides in the Jarl's Longhouse with his wife Thaena and their son Assur. He will generally be found there all day except around 7pm, when he takes his son to The Frozen Hearth for a few hours. Should the Imperials take over Winterhold, however, Korir will be replaced by Kraldar and he and his family will be exiled to Brunwulf Free-Winter's House, instead of the Palace of the Kings in Windhelm like other Stormcloak-allied jarls.
Due to the destructive event known as "The Great Collapse" that had plunged most of Winterhold into the Sea of Ghosts, Korir hates and distrusts the College of Winterhold, as well as its mages (and elves in general, according to his son), accusing them of causing the catastrophe on account of their secretive nature and the fact that the College was mysteriously untouched by it. Like most in Winterhold, he bemoans the city's decline and fervently wishes to restore Winterhold to its former glory. To this end, if asked for work, he sends you to retrieve the Helm of Winterhold, which he believes will help him to gain credibility and respect from the other jarls.
Korir wears an outfit consisting of a fur-trimmed cloak, a copper and ruby circlet, a pair of fine armguards, and a pair of pleated shoes. He carries a belted tunic along with a selection of common loot and gold.

DialogueEdit
His greetings:
- "I don't care how many Colleges they build, or how much the sea swallows up. I'll outlast them all."
- "You know Winterhold used to be the seat of power in Skyrim? Now it's a shell."
- "Few will admit it, but we know the truth about the Great Collapse."
- "The College is the worst thing that's ever happened to Winterhold, maybe to Skyrim."
- "Those cursed mages... It's their fault Winterhold is gone."
- "What is it now?"
- "You want something?"
In exile, Korir will instead say either:
- "Driven out of my own home. After all this, I can't believe it."
- "It wasn't enough that the College still stands, now the damnable Empire has Winterhold. I hope they all freeze to death."
The first time you approach Korir, he will ask you:
- "What's your business here in Winterhold?"
You can reply in three ways:
- I'm here for the College.
- "Should've known. Not that it matters anymore. No one bothers coming to Winterhold for any other reason."
- Just passing through.
- "Stay clear of that College, if you know what's good for you. Nothing but foul deeds behind those walls."
- Does it matter?
- "It does. The College has caused enough problems; don't need you or anyone else adding to them. If you're not here for the College, then you've little other reason to be in Winterhold at all."
If you have replied that you're here for the College, you can ask him if he has a problem with the College:
- You have a problem with the College?
- "I do, and if you count yourself among their numbers then you've blood on your hands as well. There's nothing left of Winterhold. Nothing! Everyone knows it's the College's fault that the sea swallowed our city. Still they deny it, but we all know the truth."
Alternatively, if you have replied that you were just passing through or ask back if it matters, the above dialogue won't be heard. Instead, you can inquire him about what's wrong with the College:
- What's wrong with the College?
- "Look around you. Winterhold is in this state because of those damned mages. They sit up there in their tower, doing gods-know-what, and who watches over them? The guards don't even dare go up there unless they've no choice."
You can also talk to Korir if you'd like to know more about Winterhold's history, though he will not be informative.
- I'd like to know more about Winterhold's history.
- "What's there to tell? It's mostly gone now, thanks to those damned mages in the College. Someday there'll be proof they caused the Great Collapse. Most of a city just dropping off into the sea... That doesn't just happen."
Quest-Related DialogueEdit
Dungeon DelvingEdit
If you're looking for work, Jarl Korir will have a task for you:
- You're the Jarl? I'm looking for work.
- "Winterhold has lost much of its history, and with that much of its power. I aim to change that. I've heard rumors of the resting place of the Helm of Winterhold, the very same helm that Jarl Hanse wore in the First Era. Hanse was in line to be High King of Skyrim, you know. Having that might get the ear of the other Holds and give me some authority."
-
- I'll recover the helm.
- "Good. I'll have a sum of gold waiting for your return."
-
- I don't have time for that.
- "Then I have no work for you."
Once you return with the helm:
- I have the Helm of Winterhold.
- "Can you believe that this hold used to contend for the throne of the High King? Now perhaps others will listen. Here, your reward as promised. You have Winterhold's thanks."
Thane of WinterholdEdit
- Anything else you need, my jarl?
- "There is room in my court for a new Thane. It's an honorary title, mainly, but there are a few perks someone like you could make use of. However, I could only grant the title to someone who is known throughout my Hold. You help my people, and I'll make you my Thane."
-
- It would be an honor.
- "Good luck to you."
-
- I don't have time for that now.
- "Then stop wasting my time."
Once you return:
- I've helped your people.
- "Then by my right as Jarl, I name you Thane of Winterhold. I grant you this weapon from the armory to serve as your badge of office. I'll also notify the guards of your new title. Wouldn't want them to think you're part of the common rabble, now."
ContainmentEdit
If you talk to Jarl Korir after defeating the magic anomalies plaguing the town, he will say:
- "You brought this on us! You!"
ConversationsEdit
Korir may talk to his wife about life in Winterhold:
Korir: "Looks to be another cold day."
Thaena: "Aren't they all?"
Korir: "Not like this. Feels colder than usual. Bet it's those damned Mages."
Thaena: "I'm sure you're right."
Thaena: "That... wizard is still at the Inn. I can't believe Dagur allows him to stay there."
Korir: "This is what it's come to. No one seems to care what they've done to our home."
Thaena: "It's clear that memories are far too short."
Korir: "And it's clear money matters more to Dagur than honor."
Assur may also ask his father about the College:
Assur: "Eirid says the mages at the College are nice people, but you said they're bad."
Korir: "Eirid's a little girl who doesn't understand that they're responsible for destroying our home."
Assur: "Why did they do that? Why would they be so evil?"
Korir: "Because they don't care about you or I, cub. They think they're better than all of us, and that we can just be thrown away."
Assur: "I hate them."
Korir: "That's my boy."
RumorsEdit
Korir's complaints about the inn haven't gone unnoticed, as Dagur himself can be found discussing them with his wife Haran:
Dagur: "I understand Korir has been complaining about our customers again."
Haran: "What of it? It's our inn, and they cause him no harm."
Dagur: "I believe he was suggesting their presence causes him harm."
Haran: "Well, then he's welcome to eat and drink at home, isn't he?"
NotesEdit
- In the Prima Official Game Guide, the summary for him reads:
- "Whatever optimism might have lived in Korir's heart was beaten down by decades of hearing how much better things used to be before the Great Collapse. Knowing nothing else, he carries on the grudges of his ancestors while refusing to abandon his home, so he's done everything he can to persevere. He'll maintain the traditions of his forefathers if it kills him, and he fails to realize the impact it's having on his son."
- Korir originally wasn't the initial jarl for Winterhold, instead, Kraldar was. There are still many traces left of this in the files:
- The unique jarl outfit that Korir wears is internally known as
JarlClothesKraldar
. - The cell name of Kraldar's House is actually
WinterholdKorirshouse
internally. All scenes that Korir has with his family inside the jarl's longhouse in the final game are also referred to as "Winterhold Korir's House Scenes". The location data refers to "Korri's House" instead, although this is in all likelihood just a mistake. - One of Korir's lines for the retrieval quest (see bugs) is still attached to Kraldar, which implies that at one point, Kraldar likely would've given it, rather than Korir. This also lines up more with the latter's belief in restoring Winterhold's former glory, moreso than with Korir's comments.
- Unused dialogue for Ulfric Stormcloak, General Tullius, and Arngeir meant for Season Unending all refers to Korir as the initial Imperial jarl, with Kraldar referred to as his Stormcloak replacement. Arngeir will still often refer to Korir as the Imperial jarl and Kraldar as his Stormcloak counterpart when announcing the final terms of the truce if Winterhold is exchanged.
- The unique jarl outfit that Korir wears is internally known as
- Korir won't award you with a plot of land for sale in Winterhold if Hearthfire is installed, making building a house there impossible.
BugsEdit
- His wife Thaena can be found occupying his throne, due to it being owned by the
WinterholdJarlFaction
, of which Korir isn't a part, while Thaena is.- The Unofficial Skyrim Patch, version 1.2.4, fixes this bug.
- Korir can be found wandering between Windhelm and Winterhold if Containment is an active quest while he is in exile. This is due to the quest giving him an AI package that makes him return to his editor location, this being Winterhold, even when in exile.
- The Unofficial Skyrim Patch, version 2.0.0, fixes this bug.
- Korir was supposed to say "Come back as soon as you have the helm." when exiting dialogue during the helmet retrieval quest. However, the line incorrectly checks if Kraldar is the speaker, making it go unused.
- The Unofficial Skyrim Patch, version 2.1.3, fixes this bug.
- Despite Korir's negative opinion of the College, completing First Lessons will allow you to take things from the longhouse for free, regardless of whether you are Thane or not. ?
