Markarth City Guards are guards who act as the military and police force of Markarth. These guards serve under Jarl Igmund. Should the Stormcloak forces gain control of Markarth, they will be replaced by Stormcloak Guards under the service of Jarl Thongvor. They wear a green version of the guard armor.

DialogueEdit

When visiting Markarth for the first time:

"First time in Markarth, traveler? Take my advice. You see anything, don't get involved. The city guard will take care of it."
Is there some problem in the city?
"See, there you go. Getting involved. Don't ask too many questions in Markarth. Safer for everyone that way."
Who's in charge of Markarth?
"Jarl Igmund sits on the Mournful Throne. You can find him in the keep, in the back end of the city inside the mountain."/"You here to see the Jarl? No sudden moves, understand?"
I just need some supplies and a drink.
"You're our favorite kind of traveler, then. The market area is just inside in the gate."
"Head on in. Keep your nose clean, and you won't have any problems with us."

Below is a table of all guard dialogue specific to Markarth City Guards. All guard dialogue, including generic guard dialogue, can be found here.

Quest-Related EventsEdit

The Forsworn ConspiracyEdit

After the incident inside the Treasury House, or your encounter with Nepos the Nose, the plot thickens, although Eltrys will never find out what was really going on. When you enter the Shrine of Talos you will find Eltrys dead on the floor, and three Markarth City Guards waiting for you. "We warned you, but you just had to go and cause trouble. Now we have to pin all these recent murders on you. Silence witnesses. Work. Work. Work."

What did you do to Eltrys?
"Same thing we do with all the other natives who want to change things around here. We had a nice little deal going between Thonar and Madanach until you and Eltrys started snooping around. Well, you wanted to find the man responsible for those killings? You'll have plenty of time with the King in Rags when you're in Cidhna mine [sic]."
You're corrupt. Thonar is paying you.
"We have a nice arrangement in this city, and we're not letting you get in the way. You have a problem with that? Take it up with Madanach. I'm sure the King in rags and his Forsworn would love to meet you. Now you're coming with us. It's a life sentence in Cidhna Mine for you."
Madanach is behind these killings!
"You think you're the only one who knows that? We had a nice little deal going between Thonar and Madanach until you showed up. You'll have plenty of time to take it up with the King in Rags while you're serving a life sentence in Cidhna Mine."

The guards there will now attempt to arrest you. You can try to resist arrest or talk your way out of it; however, you must submit to being jailed in order to advance the quest to No One Escapes Cidhna Mine.

If you are already a thane before starting this quest, and you pickpocketed Nepos's journal to avoid conflict; you may be able to avoid arrest and/or infamy related to finishing the quest by the following:

  1. Go back to the shrine of Talos to meet Eltrys.
  2. Allow the main guard there to initiate the dialogue:
    1. Guard: "We warned you... ...Work. Work. Work."
  3. Exit the chat before responding [press B etc].
  4. The guard will immediately re-engage you.
    1. Guard: "You have committed crimes against the Jarl... how do you respond?"" (Or similar dialogue depending on version).
    2. Player: "I am the thane. I demand you release me at once"", to which the guard will apologize, and give the standard response to using thaneship to avoid crimes.
  5. You must then immediately exit the shrine of Talos.
    1. If you do not immediately exit the shrine the guard (Presumably realizing his error) tries to re-engage you once again, back down the quest related options of dialogue: jail or resist only, and will immediately attack if you try to exit the dialogue any further.
  6. Once exiting, the main guard will follow outside, but will have apparently forgotten about the whole thing once leaving the shrine; as will all of the guards around who will treat you as before the quest started /no bounty or arrest warrant.

You can also re-enter the shrine of Talos with this method to loot Eltrys's body after, which will remain in place alongside the other two guards (who will have normal dialogue with you instead of trying to arrest or attack).

This route will complete The Forsworn Conspiracy quest without starting No One Escapes Cidhna Mine while keeping you free from the repercussions of finishing The Forsworn Conspiracy quest line. Using this method you will not be able to start the No One Escapes Cindha Mine quest line.
